Entrepreneurial Studies gives you the tools you need to start or expand a business, manage a small business, lead innovation efforts in a corporate environment, or become an effective manager in a fast-growing enterprise.

About the Major

This interdisciplinary major gives you a background in many disciplines, including marketing, finance, accounting, and law. You will graduate with understanding of all aspects of business.

Gain hands-on experience by providing resources, training, and support to a local micro-business. You will complete a professional business plan to use to start your own venture. You may also choose to enter our annual Business Plan Competition. Our faculty will help you every step of the way.

Degree Requirements

The program combines core classes, specialized courses, electives, and an internship. You will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

Career Outlook

The majority of new job openings in the United States today are in small businesses, and most successful business leaders have strong entrepreneurial skills. But you won’t be limited to starting your own business. An Entrepreneurial Studies major will also prepare you for careers as managers, consultants, advisors, and many others.

Entrepreneurial Studies Major, Project Management Minor,

Alison credits Barney, as well as the Career Studio, to having a significant impact on her professional career. Access to the abundance of career ready events helped Alison to land a position at Nassau Financial Group during the Summer of 2022 as their Human Resources Intern. Her experience at Nassau was nothing short of amazing. She was able to practice real-world recruitment, administrative and interpersonal skills within this program. Read more.

Barney Business Plan Competition Congratulates Four Winners

The event had record-breaking participation for the 21 years that it's been running, with 56 students developing plans and presenting them at the initial competition on Dec. 1, 2024. Not only were Barney students a part of this, but it also spanned across the University with students from CETA, ENHP, Arts & Sciences, HAS, and Hartt.

Barney recently held the Spring 2023 Business Plan Competition, which included students with a diverse group of studies. Students from the following schools participated - College of Arts & Sciences, Barney School of Business, The Hartford Art School, The Hartt School of Music, and the College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture.

Hartford Business Journal Features University Entrepreneur Programs

The University of Hartford’s entrepreneurship programs were highlighted in a recent Hartford Business Journal article about entrepreneurial offerings at local colleges. Stephen Mulready, dean of UHart’s Barney School of Business, noted that alumni have helped make the programs what they are today. They include Frank Finelli, who majored in entrepreneurial studies at UHart and founded the famed Doughwich cookie dough ice cream sandwich, and Sam McGee, founder of Green Egg Design LLC, which produces “beer bat” drinking cups now found at stadiums across the country.
